3 tips on how to get organized before the holiday season

Another year is passing by fast, which means we’re all preparing for what 2016 has to offer. With the holiday season, comes the need to re-evaluate the good and the bad in every aspect of our lives. When it comes to our professional life, one of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to be more organized, more efficient and to get more things done on time. Therefore, here are three useful tips to get more organized, so that you can enjoy your holidays:

  1. Read your emails in the morning when you get to the office and answer those who can’t be delayed. Then, when you start working on something else, close the receiving email notification system to avoid interruptions. Emails will still be there when you finish, but at least you will have no disturbing noises that will distract from work, remembering all the things you haven’t done yet. Don’t interrupt yourself throughout the day to check your email or your online profiles, or else you won’t even know when time flies.
  2. It is extremely easy to overlook certain aspects or activities when trying to juggle several things in parallel. That’s why a document management system is a lifesaver because it stores all your files and folder, even the ones that you receive from remote colleagues or via email. That way, you can track down project progress and you can correct possible errors as they appear along the way.
  3. Treat things in a SMART way when doing your task list. The SMART (Specific, Measurable, Accessible, Relevant, Timed) features, which usually apply to setting goals may be used in this case. Every morning, assess what you can accomplish that day. If you want “to work on project x”, this task it is too general, not specific, nor measurable, nor timed and you risk that at the end of the day you leave with the feeling that you have done nothing for the day. Aim “to allocate two hours to make the presentation to the shareholders meeting” so you have a task that meets all three criteria. Use the SMART criteria to determine which are the important things that can’t wait, relevant and approachable to achieve on time, and then start working. You need to do this to be able to respect your deadlines or even assess those activities that you overestimated.

These are some helpful tips that you might consider, so that you can get all your work done before the holidays and you can enjoy the time you spend with family and friends, without worrying about what’s going on at the office. Just remember that being organized and efficient means also being able to take advantage of all the resources available, be it human resource, software, training etc.
